Istanbul On My Mind

Istanbul On My Mind

About 3 years ago, I traveled to Istanbul to write stories in FastCompany.com about women in the Dell Women’s Entrepreneur Network.

The day my plane left, citizens rose up in protest over the unilateral decision by then Prime Minister Erdogan to kill 600-year old trees in Gezi Park for a construction project. While these protests were not directed at Americans or any other international group, the tension kept us from seeing as much of Istanbul as we might have.

I absolutely loved Istanbul: the people, the food, the entertainment, the ambiance, the entrepreneurial spirit, etc. I can’t wait to return.

When the terror attack hit the Istanbul airport this past week, I looked at my father and said, “That airport will be open tomorrow morning.” And, oprn it did–just hours after the attack.

The resiliency of the Turkish people does not allow for terror to close the 11th largest airport in the world. It is an important gateway to Europe, the Middle East and Asia and the headquarters for a wonderful airline, Turkish Air.

The terrorists win if they can shut down an important travel gateway. They barely succeeded.

For the dead and injured, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thought for the week:

“The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference.” – Elie Wiesel, Auschwitz Survivor, Nobel Prize Winner and Author who died at 87 this past week
